Paint It Black is the directorial debut of Amber Tamblyn, based on the novel by Janet Fitch. Before scoring it, Amber and I talked about the world of this film, and music from other films that we loved. We ended up in a pretty dark 80s-inspired place with a few glimmers of light. Analog synths and loops are mixed with acoustic piano and electric guitar. All of these cues are in the film except "Guitar Thief" which was written for a scene in the film that ended up working best with no music at all, but the song is included here as a bonus track.

Paint It Black stars Alia Shawkat and Janet McTeer and is in theaters May 19th.
